Although Sandra was involved with the club earlier than the mid 90's, my lasting memory of her is from around this time when she took
control of the virtually non-existent junior side of the club. In the ensuing years with her drive and determination, she built team
numbers up to where we are today, with one of the
biggest junior sections in Canterbury hockey.
Before the start of each season, she would travel to heaps of primary schools to drum up numbers, not a fun task trying to speak in
front of a large group of 5 to 11 year olds. But as the numbers increased, it obviously showed they listened to her.
One thing I always found amusing with Sandra was her view of financial things. She has always organised the end of season junior prize giving,
where everything is priced out to the exact cent. Cans of drink and bags of chips are handed out in precise numbers. All this to ensure she
hadn't gone over budget. She never wanted to see the juniors miss out, but also never wanted them to be subsidised by the senior ranks.
Sandra was a very active member of the Committee for many years, and was always happy to help out.
Not having Sandra will leave
a huge hole, not only in HSOB/Burnside Hockey but in Canterbury Hockey in general.
We'll miss her hugely.
